Custom Engagement Rings in Canada: Step-by-Step From First Consult to Final Ring

There are many ways to buy an engagement ring. You can browse cases, scroll endless product pages, or click on a ready-made design and hope it feels right.

A custom engagement ring is different. It starts with a conversation, not a catalogue. Instead of choosing from preset options, you work with a jeweler to shape a ring that reflects your story, your priorities, and how you want it to feel on the person who will wear it every day.

Gado is a fine jewelry house, designed in Canada and launched in November 2025, built around an intentional process. We focus on 18K gold, ethically sourced natural diamonds, and carefully sourced Colombian emeralds, and we offer virtual consultations (for clients across Canada and beyond) or in-person consultations for clients in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

If you’re researching custom engagement rings in Canada, this guide walks you through the process with Gado, from the first call to the final reveal.

Step 1: The Initial Consultation Vision, Intent, and Story

Every custom ring begins with a conversation.

Our first step together is an initial consult, held either over video or, when practical, in person in the GTA. There’s no “sales script” to get through; instead, we’re trying to understand three things:

  • What you or your partner actually love,

  • How the ring needs to function in daily life, and

  • What the piece should represent long-term.

Some clients arrive with a folder of reference images, screenshots, or sketches. Others bring a strong sense of style: “she loves clean lines and yellow gold,” or “he wears simple jewelry but appreciates details.” Sometimes the starting point is less visual and more emotional, a feeling you want the ring to carry.

We’ll talk through:

  • lifestyle (hands-on work, minimal jewelry, or a collector of fine pieces),

  • aesthetic direction (classic solitaire, Art Deco-inspired, asymmetric, low-profile, etc.),

  • preferences around diamonds or emeralds, and

  • any meaningful details, dates, or symbols that might be woven into the design.

This stage is intentionally unhurried. The goal is not to rush to a sketch but to listen carefully, so the ring that emerges later feels aligned rather than generic.

Step 2: Choosing the Gemstone Diamonds, Emeralds, and Character

Once we understand your vision, we turn to the gemstone. The center stone shapes the entire ring: its presence on the hand, its color story, and its overall character.

Natural Diamonds

For clients drawn to the traditional brilliance of a diamond, we work exclusively with natural, conflict-free diamonds. Rather than pushing you toward a particular size or grade, we focus on how the stone presents as a whole, its balance of cut, color, clarity, and carat in real light, not just on paper.

We’ll walk you through:

  • How cut influences brightness and fire,

  • How color ranges appear in different metals (for example, slightly warmer diamonds in yellow gold), and

  • How clarity grades translate visually (what is visible to the eye versus only under magnification).

The priority is not chasing perfect numbers, but choosing a stone that looks and feels right for you.

Colombian Emeralds

If you’re searching for a custom engagement ring in Canada that stands apart from traditional diamond solitaires, Colombian emeralds are a compelling option.

At Gado, emeralds are a particular focus. We work closely with partners in Colombia to source stones with strong color, life, and character, then have them faceted with great care. This means we can look beyond “ideal” shapes on paper and instead search for the specific emerald that suits your design: maybe a slightly elongated emerald-cut for a modern look, or a softer oval with a romantic presence.

We pay attention to:

  • origin transparency,

  • the type and degree of accepted treatments, and

  • how each stone behaves in real lighting conditions.

Emeralds are never “perfect” in the way some people expect diamonds to be. Tiny internal features known as jardin are part of their identity. The goal is to find an emerald whose overall beauty and personality feel right for the ring and for the wearer.

Beyond a Single “Right” Answer

Some couples come in already decided on a diamond or emerald. Others explore a few options before landing on what feels like them. Our role is to guide you through that decision with clear, straightforward information, so you can choose the stone that fits your taste, your everyday life, and your budget.

Step 3: Design & CAD Development Translating Ideas into Form

Once the gemstone is chosen, the design phase begins.

We translate everything gathered during the consultation, the reference images, lifestyle notes, and preferences for metal and setting height into an initial concept. This is where your ring moves from idea to form, while remaining flexible and collaborative.

You can expect:

  • A design proposal that outlines the overall structure (for example, a classic solitaire with A particular type of band and setting),

  • Detailed CAD (computer-aided design) renderings that show proportions, angles, and how the stone sits on the band, and

  • Room for feedback at every stage.

Rather than limiting you to a set number of changes, we aim for 100% satisfaction, so there is no hard cap on design alterations. If a prong shape feels too sharp, we soften it. If the band width feels too delicate or too bold in renderings, we adjust. If seeing the design in profile raises new questions, we address them.

Nothing moves into production until you are fully comfortable with the design. The goal here is clarity and confidence, not surprise.

Step 4: Material Selection Building the Foundation in 18K Gold

With the design confirmed, we finalize the metal.

All Gado engagement rings are crafted using fine materials chosen for longevity and wearability, with 18K gold as our standard. We do not treat higher karat gold as an “upgrade”; it is simply how we build our pieces.

You can choose from:

  • 18K yellow gold, with its warm, classic glow,

  • 18K white gold, for a cleaner, cooler look, or

  • 18K rose gold, which offers a softer, romantic tone.

At this time, we do not work with platinum, and we do not offer heirloom melts (melting down existing gold to reuse in a new piece). Instead, we focus on fresh, high-quality materials that pair beautifully with natural diamonds and emeralds and hold up to everyday wear when properly cared for.

This stage is also where we discuss finish (high polish, soft sheen, etc.), band width, and comfort details. The aim is a ring that feels as good on the hand as it looks in photos.

Step 5: Crafting & Setting From Digital Model to Finished Ring

With gemstone, design, and metal confirmed, the ring moves into production.

Each piece is crafted by skilled artisans who combine traditional goldsmithing techniques with modern precision tools. The process typically includes:

  • Creating the ring structure based on the CAD model,

  • Preparing the setting to match the exact measurements of your chosen diamond or emerald,

  • Carefully setting the stone, and

  • Finishing the ring by polishing, refining the edges, and conducting final checks.

Emeralds, in particular, require patience and care at the bench. Their natural structure requires thoughtful handling at every stage, from setting to polishing, to protect their integrity and highlight their beauty. We take that responsibility seriously.

While the crafting stage itself usually spans four to six weeks, the entire custom process from initial consultation through to final piece typically takes about three to six weeks, depending on

design complexity and gemstone sourcing for your specific ring. When timelines are sensitive (for example, you have a fixed proposal date), we discuss that early so we can plan accordingly.

Step 6: The Final Reveal Presentation and Delivery

When the ring is complete, it moves into its final stage: presentation.

You can choose between:

  • In-person collection (for clients who are able to meet in the GTA for a private handover), or

  • Secure, insured shipping, carefully packaged and tracked, for clients across Canada and internationally.

Each ring arrives in Gado’s signature packaging, designed to protect the piece and feel appropriate for the moment of opening. We also include relevant documentation and care guidance to help you look after your diamond or emerald ring over time.

Some clients propose the same day they receive the ring. Others tuck it away for a planned trip, a quiet evening at home, or a meaningful date. However you choose to use it, the ring is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Engagement Rings with Gado

How Much Do Custom Engagement Rings Cost At Gado?

Pricing depends on the gemstone, metal choice, and design complexity. Most custom engagement rings range from CAD $3,000 to $15,000, but we can discuss your specific budget and options during your consultation.

How Long Does The Process Take?

From consultation to final delivery, most projects take three to six weeks. If your design involves particularly specific gemstone sourcing or intricate details, we will outline any extended timeline before we begin.

Do You Work With Clients Outside Canada?

Yes. While we focus on the Canadian market, we’re happy to connect with international clients seeking our approach to fine jewelry and custom engagement rings. Virtual consultations and digital approvals make it straightforward to collaborate from North America, Europe, and beyond.

Why Gado?

Many jewellers offer custom services. Gado’s approach is less about competing with them and more about staying true to what we do well.

A few guiding principles:

Client-centered from start to finish

Every project starts by listening. We design around your needs and your partner’s style, not a pre-set template. The process is collaborative and transparent, with no rushed decisions or hidden steps.

Natural Materials, Chosen With Care

We work largely with natural gemstones, especially natural diamonds and Colombian emeralds, and build our designs in 18K gold as standard. That combination gives each piece a sense of substance and longevity.

Detail-Driven Craftsmanship

From CAD refinement to final polishing, small decisions add up: how the ring feels between the fingers, how the prongs sit against the stone, how the emerald or diamond catches light in everyday settings.

Thoughtful Pricing For Fine Jewelry

Custom fine jewelry will never be “cheap,” but we aim to offer reasonably priced options for the quality of the materials and the care involved. You know what you’re paying for, and why.

Gemstone Sourcing With Intention

When a design calls for a specific diamond or emerald, we don’t simply choose the closest available. We’re prepared to go further, working with our partners in Colombia to find the right emerald and facet it to excellence, or identifying a diamond that hits the right balance of character and value.

Ultimately, we create pieces meant to be worn, lived in, and passed on, not just photographed and forgotten.
